石堅論壇第58講: Recent Global Lake Change Patterns Revealed from Remotely Sensed Big Data

報告摘要: Lakes store a major portion of liquid freshwater on the Earth’s surface, representing an irreplaceable resource to domestic, agricultural, and industrial water supplies. They are dynamic and complex aquatic ecosystems, significant sources of food and recreation, and a source of water vapor and trace gases to the atmosphere. Changes in the extent of lakes thus have significant ramifications for the hydrology, ecology, carbon cycle, exchange of energy and greenhouse gases with the atmosphere, and human use. Understanding their distributions and change trends at regional and global scales is of crucial social and ecological importance. Remote sensing offers the only feasible approach for systematic lake mapping and inventory at the global scale. This presentation introduces our recently produced circa-2000 and circa-2015 high-resolution global lake databases from remote sensing in order to provide a comprehensive assessment of decadal lake dynamics. Nearly nine-million lakes have been delineated using the big-data archive of Landsat scenes acquired during “l(fā)ake-stable” seasons, and the mapped lake extents have gone through intensive quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures. Lake geographic and size distributions for each continent will be discussed. The detected lake changes exhibit strongly heterogeneous spatial patterns that can be explained by regional climatic changes together with localized glacier variations and human disturbance activities. The observed 15-year lake changes provide a valuable baseline for lake dynamics studies, and a number of lake change hotspots have been identified for intensive filed observation, further investigation, and long-term monitoring.
報告人簡介:

盛永偉教授,加州大學(xué)洛杉磯分校(UCLA)地理系教授,主要研究方向包括遙感、攝影測量、地理信息系統(tǒng),及其在資源管理、環(huán)境分析及全球變化研究中的應(yīng)用。早年畢業(yè)于浙江大學(xué)地球科學(xué)系遙感專業(yè),分別于1988、1991獲得學(xué)士和碩士學(xué)位,并于2000年獲得加州大學(xué)伯克利分校環(huán)境科學(xué)及政策管理系博士學(xué)位。曾任教于紐約州立大學(xué)環(huán)境科學(xué)暨林業(yè)學(xué)院。在國際主要專業(yè)期刊上發(fā)表論文百篇,其中包括Science、Nature、PNAS等雜志,Nature曾報道他的研究成果。他近期的研究項目包括北極地區(qū)熱融湖研究、青藏高原古湖泊及現(xiàn)代湖泊、中亞地區(qū)水資源,以及全球湖泊動態(tài)演變研究等等。他曾擔(dān)任美國USGS/NASA Landsat系列衛(wèi)星科學(xué)委員會委員,目前是NASA新一代海洋與水文衛(wèi)星SWOT計劃科學(xué)委員會成員。此外,還是中國科學(xué)院聘請的海外評審專家,2018/2019學(xué)年度作為特聘教授在中科院青藏高原研究所訪學(xué)。
