TEN YEARS OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND SCIENCE – AND WHY IT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER.
This presentation will take a ten year perspective on the evolution of GIS and GIScience, through the lens of three editions of one textbook in the area. Today, anyone who uses Google Maps or Earth on their desktop or smartphone is aware of the potential of spatial analysis, but they should also be aware of its potential pitfalls. At its heart, GIS remains centrally concerned with the unique, complex and sometimes difficult choices that arise in answering the question “Where?” This presentation will provide an overview of the core organizing concepts that continue to characterize the field, as well as more recent developments in ‘open source’ data and software, developments in Web technology and location-based services, and the changing management setting to GIS usage.
